Laszlo Halasz

At the request of Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, Hungarian-born conductor Laszlo Halasz helped form the New York City Center and later served as the Artistic and Music Director for the New York City Opera company from 1943 to 1951.

Halasz was a key exponent in bringing "Troubled Island" to the American stage, and, he conducted the premiere performance of Still's opera on March 31, 1949.

Music Director Laszlo Halasz and renowned stage and costume designer, Heinz A. Condel (1905-1951), reviewing a pre-production stage design for Troubled Island.  Condel was affliated with the New York City Opera from 1944 until his death.
