Judith Anne Still and Lisa M. Headlee are very pleased to bring to public awareness the historically significant story of William Grant Still's opera, "Troubled Island." It was a difficult story to bring forth, but necessary.
The editors hope that this publication will eventually lead to the opera's well-deserved, first long-run productions on American and international stages.
JUDITH ANNE STILL
Biographical and Career Notes

After becoming a member of Phi Beta Kappa and graduating with high honors from the University of Southern California, Judith Anne Still received her M.A. degree and secondary teaching credentials from California State University at Fullerton. She then pursued varied careers as an instructor of college English, correspondent for a noted actress of the stage and screen, founder of the Larry Headlee Scholarship Fund (named for her deceased geologist husband who pioneered in mini-submarine operations), and freelance writer. Her many published works have received several awards, including a Washington Educational Press Award, an American Legion Award, and a Freedoms Foundation Award. One of her early articles was read into the Congressional Record. She has dedicated almost three decades to her work as director of WILLIAM GRANT STILL MUSIC. She is the mother of four now-grown children, and the grandmother of three.
LISA M. HEADLEE
Biographical and Career Notes
Lisa M. Headlee received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, graduating Magna Cum Laude. She serves as Special Projects Manager for William Grant Still Music and as Publication Coordinator for The Master-Player Library. She is author of the well-received publication, Classical Music Trivia, co-editor of William Grant Still and the Fusion of Cultures in American Music and Just Tell the Story: Troubled Island, as well as coordinator for numerous other book and sheet music publications. She has also worked as a program administrator for other various corporate and educational organizations. She is the oldest granddaughter of William Grant Still and Verna Arvey, and, the mother of two children.
